From Clean Plates to Clean Cities: this year's theme calls for action to prevent food waste, keep edible food in use, recover unavoidable organic materials, and build cleaner, more circular and resource-efficient cities.

2026 Theme: Invest in Peace - For Everyone, Everywhere, Every Day. Honours the 'everyday architects of peace'—people driving local action, laying the groundwork for stability, and building a lasting peace from the ground up.

This year's theme will focus on the "Transformative Potential of Reducing Food Loss and Waste", to generate a triple win: improving food security and nutrition, reducing pressure on natural resources and greenhouse gas emissions, and enhancing productivity and economic growth.

Over the last 60 years, at least 40 percent of all internal conflicts have been linked to the exploitation of natural resources, whether high-value resources such as timber, diamonds, gold and oil, or scarce resources such as fertile land and water. 

Sustainable transport — with its objectives of universal access, enhanced safety, reduced environmental and climate impact, improved resilience, and greater efficiency — is central to sustainable development.
